Security proofing your home for a vacation

  • Written by The Chronicle

You've worked hard to earn that vacation. You deserve it! Now it's time to relax, have fun and enjoy your time off from work. But there's one thing you need to be aware of: burglaries are most likely to happen when the home is empty. So if you want to keep your belongings safe, here are some easy tips so you can enjoy your vacation without worrying about theft or damage.

Have someone you trust to check on your house

If you're going on vacation, make sure you have a friend or family member check in on your house every once in a while. Having someone come by every few days gives potential burglars pause since they'll know there's someone who might catch them in the act.

Double check all doors and windows are locked before you leave

Make sure all of your doors and windows are locked before leaving town and double-check again to make sure. You never know if someone has gone out a door or opened a window since you last checked. This should be the very last thing you do before you walk out the door.

Install sensor lights

You should also consider getting motion-sensor lights if possible—they will go off if anyone tries to get into your house at night, which will scare off most intruders before they can get any further than the front door.

Remove spare keys if any

If you are not planning on being home, remove any hidden spare keys so they don't end up in the wrong hands while they are looking for ways inside your house. This is something many people don't think about but it can really protect them while they are gone.

Fix any broken locks, windows etc

If you have any broken locks or windows around your home, make sure you have these repaired before you go. Burglars will usually take the easiest and most discreet point of entry. Your gold coast home locksmith can help repair any broken locks and ensure your home is locked well before you go away on holiday.

Put away any potential makeshift entry items

Anything that could be used to gain entry into your home that's laying around should be put away. Things such as crowbars, ladders, chairs etc.

Install security cameras

A security camera system is a great way to protect your home and belongings. Burglars are less likely to target homes that have video surveillance due to the risk of being caught. Having security cameras is a great deterrent and if they do proceed to break in, you'll have footage of them which can help you to have them charged.

Convert your old locks to smart locks

Smart locks can be more difficult for thieves to get past than conventional locks. By using these locks, you can keep your house secure both when you're away and when you get back. Additionally, WiFi locks enable remote monitoring of lock openings.

Switch off your automatic garage

Unplug the garage door opener. Some remotes can unlock any garage door. As an added layer of security, you can add a robust manual lock to your garage door for additional assurance.

A little security goes a long way toward peace of mind while you are away

Most of us love when we get to go on holiday and nothing can ruin it more than knowing that you have been broken into. The harder it is for a burglar to gain entry into your home, the less likely that they are going to try.
